Angelo Belli

Angelo Belli was born about 1875 in Monte San Giovanni Campano and carried his young family down out of the hills to Rome. He and Giovina Gargari raised two sons through the 1890s, and on 19 May 1901 the two were married in a civil ceremony in the capital — barely three months before Angelo died there, on 19 August, at just twenty‑six.

The timing has the shape of a man setting his house in order at the end: a marriage of long standing, first made before the church, finally entered in the ledgers of the young Italian state as its keeper prepared to leave it. His death act names his own parents — Domenico Belli and Faustina Salvalaglio — the generation before him.
