James Lee was born into a Minnesota household where two old countries had already been joined under one roof — Peter, the soldier’s son of the Rusyn mountains, and Iris, the war bride of Rome. He grew up carrying both of them in a single name, and married Mary Scheremet, joining the Ukrainian line to the other two.
