Eva Scheremet

Eva was born on the 20th of February, 1923, in Kovali, a village of the Zhytomyr country in Soviet Ukraine. She was nineteen when the Germans seized her in 1942 and shipped her west as forced labor — one of millions of Ostarbeiter torn out of their homes. She would never see that village again.
Half a world away in Minneapolis she built a new life; and the family she had left kept looking for her. In 1962 her sister Nadezhda cast a search out through the Red Cross, a line thrown across the Iron Curtain — and it came back empty.
